This book is incredible! But read with caution XD
Seriously, this book is way better than I thought it would be. I don't know what I was expecting really; I bought it because I was looking for information on explosives after watching a ton of Mythbusters and getting questions from my kids that I couldn't answer (they blow up something in almost every episode). This was recommended by Amazon when I was searching and although it's not quite what I was really looking for, it's so interesting that I couldn't stop reading it! XDHowever there is a caveat: don't try any of this stuff at home! There's some warnings in the front of the book about this too but I just want to say... this gives VERY detailed explanations about how -EXACTLY how!- to make many different types of extremely potent explosives. In the wrong hands this could be very dangerous. But for inquisitive and curious minds that love just knowing how things work, oh my gods this book is a dream come true. Love it! 5 stars and more if I could.

practical and usefull
this book really has all you need to become a conoisseur of the finer explosives. It covers everything from material choice, recipes for the main high explosives through to detonators, safety and storage tips. Each recipe also includes a very good explanation on how to procure certain of the chemicals needed without leaving a paper trail 5 miles long. I can say from personal experience that these recipes do indeed work, and with a bit of creative chemistry one could convert these recipes to work with some of your day to day bathroom, tool shed or cleaning products to produce some crude yet effective explosives(I have succeeded in this without any chemical experience whatsoever).the book gives an insight that explosives are within the grasp of any DIY terrorist with even half a decent brain.learn how to protect yourself from them, BUY THIS BOOK!

Product Description

This book earns the title! Over the course of 172 pages, I have taken all of the great material in the first edition and added to it a series of recipes and procedures which produce military grade explosives from commonplace items and materials. In doing so, I conclusively prove that the restrictions which have been placed upon the access to the commercially produced explosives which were so freely available in my youth are all futile. The real enemies in "the war on terror" are not inanimate objects such as explosives. The real enemies are the politicians who have flung open our borders to infiltration by Moslem guerrillas. These guerrillas are already well versed in the techniques of improvised weaponry manufacture.

This treasure trove of explosive information features The Hardware Store Nitro Recipe, Fuel/Air Explosives, military equivalent ammonium nitrate formulations, nitromethane mixtures, and a vastly improved detonator section.

The expose`of the folly of our present policies doesn't stop there either! Read all about the construction of remote control cruise missiles and RC torpedoes. Claymore mines and air cannons add spice to the stew. Then top it all off with my commentary on the easiest ways to obtain all the materials mentioned in the book.

I've read all the books on the topic of explosives from tiny paperbacks to 600 page texts written by PhDs. I have no hesitation saying this book tops them all! It's my hope that when you finish reading this book, politicians will no longer be able to fool or distract you by blaming an inanimate object such as explosives for the direct results of their disastrous policies. Fascinating Book for Education and Reference
I recently purchased the Home Workshop Explosives book and found it an interesting and quite fascinating read. The author appears to have an extensive knowledge in the subject matter. I grew up with model rocketry and experimenting with chemistry as a hobby. Although now retired, I still enjoy learning about technical things in how things are made, science and electronics. But I mention this with a caveat - just because you study a subject doesn't mean you should try to create everything you learn about.Being prior military and retired law enforcement as well as still being involved in Emergency Management, I can see legitimate purposes for this book as a informative and educational treatise on how certain chemicals react with each other as well as what type chemicals first responders may want to acquaint themselves with for safety purposes. Actually my primary reason for purchasing the book was I hoped to find some safe and legal pyrotechnic information that I could use...

Product Description

A manual for purely informational purposes on how to make explosives from common products you might have in your own kitchen.
Includes numerous plastic explosives information as well as how to make blasting caps. Obviously: DO NOT TRY AND MAKE ANYTHING IN THIS BOOK! Top to learn more

Good information
Good information for anyone interested in wanting to know how something can be done. As from the review before, this is not something you should be doing but it is something that will increase anyone's knowledge. This review is about the content not about the responsibility of the author.

Informative
This book is quite informative. In fact, maybe a little too informative. haha. Other than that, the author seems to know quite well what they are doing. The book seems very repetitive though. Almost every similar item is actually almost the exact same in the production. Good read, but nothing you would just sit down and read through, more like a cook book that you would have sitting in the kitchen.

Best Introduction
There are two negative things to be said of this textbook: I had trouble putting it down, reading well into the night; and, I wanted more. For those entering the field of explosive engineering, this is an excellant first text. Having learned about shock waves from texts and reports written by those who created the field of explosive engineering, it was a task to learn on my own. Paul Cooper has written a book that makes the subject seem so simple and understandable I wonder why I had so much difficulty understanding these basics. This can only be explained by this text having been written by someone who knows the subject intimately, and has tremendous skills as a wordsmith. It is also obvious that Paul Cooper has put considerable of effort into this work, not letting it be published until it was truely ready. It is well worth the price, and will be as great a value to the savant as to the neophyte in this field. An excellant predecessor to Paul Cooper's...

Excellent First Book on Explosives and Propellants
Excellent starter which covers the chemistry, burning mechanics, shock mechanics and scaling laws. The book does contain quite a bit of material on practical concerns such as example devices, storage, facilities and operations.Unfortunately, this results in a limited coverage of more advanced concepts, but this is what is to be expected in an introductory book. It is not a textbook, so it is very uesful and does not leave the reader hanging on any subject. Paul Cooper's writing style is conversational and clear. The material on propellant burning in this book does not appear in his more advanced book "Explosives Engineering". For the reader new to the field, this book will probably be the best choice.

Not five - ten stars...
This is a chemistry book for all kinds of people interested in explosive chemistry. This book is not only for the advanced explosive expert,it is also written for the beginner, for learning the basic explosive characteristics. It provides us readers with a well rounded selection of high explosives, including dynamite,R.D.X,TNT,low explosives and propellants, Nitrosamines, primary explosives, the assembling of detonators, and a big chapter of Pyrotechnics is also include. And that is presented us all on 490 pp. for only $ 20.00.That's unbelivabely! He also tells us not only chemical and physical aspects,he discovers the manufacturing of explosives and pyrotechnic compositions through the past centuries and tells us historical facts about explosives.

A real treat if you are interested in chemistry
I ran across this book (earlier edition) as a student. I am not a chemist but I loved chemistry. The book is well written, draws from a wide range of sources and gives fascinating details of reactions and practical details which I just never found anywhere else. I read it with great enjoyment and I hope you do too. Just don't be a bloody fool and maim yourself or kill anyone else. The chemistry and history are fine. Buggering about with them can be a bad, bad move; trust one who has tried!

Product Description

The present volume contains in one binding the whole contents of Volume I, first published in May, 1941, and the whole contents of Volume II which was published in March, 1943. The book was primarily for chemists. The writing of it was commenced in order that a textbook might be available for the use of students in the course in powder and explosives which the author gave for about twenty years (nearly every year since the first World War) to fourth-year and graduate students of chemistry and of chemical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.... The aim of the book has been too described as clearly and interestingly as possible and as fully as seemed profitable the modes of behavior, both physical and chemical, of explosive substances, whether these modes find practical application or not. Historical material has been included where it was thought that it contributed to this end, and has not been included elsewhere or for any other reason. It is a fact that a knowledge of the history of ideas, of persons, or of things produces something of the same sympathetic understanding of them that living with them and working with them does. --- excerpts from book's Preface Top to learn more

A landmark text.
The late Dr. Davis produced this book as part of the material used for training his grad students in WWII about chemical engineering aspects of explosives. However, the best part of the book is probably the section on the history and development of explosives. Davis was one of those scientists who had a rare grasp not only of the theoretical and practical aspects of his field, but also its historical underpinnings. This book doesn't compare with Urbanski as far as chemical engineering goes, but rather gives a brief overview of many diffrent materials that were in use in the mid twentieth century. I wouldn't recommend this book as a lab manual, but would heartily endorse it as a place to begin the study of the history of this aspect of science.

Not much effort went into this (free) Kindle version of the book; the formatting is wonky. I suspect the $3 version is much nicer; buy it and let me know.
